Matthew Tubman
Matthew Tubman was born in 1899 to William and Ruth Tubman. They lived at "Alma" Gray Street, Keiraville.
Matthew's records on the Australian War Memorial Honour Roll state that he attended Wollongong High School and later worked as a clerk; that he trained in music and typewriting and was the secretary of the Methodist Christian Endeavour Society, and was the Australian Secretary of the Glen Lodge of Druids, Wollongong.
Matthew's family descendants state he was a miner by profession.
Matthew (Service number 5104) embarked from Sydney on 5th July 1916 on HMAT Ajana A31with the 20th Infantry Battalion. At the time of his death he was with the 36th Battalion Infantry.
He was killed in action on January 22, 1917 at the age of 19. His grave is located at the Western Front, Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France.
