John McDonald (Service No 3863) was born in Balgownie, N.S.W., in 1896.

At enlistment he was 20 years old, single, worked as a miner and lived in Balgownie, N.S.W.

John embarked on HMAT A29 Suevic with the 13th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement, on 20th December 1915. After disembarking in Egypt he was transferred to the 4th Pioneers on 16th March 1916.

John arrived in France on 11th June 1916 and served with the Pioneers until 16th September 1916 when he was posted to the 4th Field Ambulance. He served on the Western Front until 12th July 1918, when he was wounded in action. John was evacuated to hospital for treatment from the effects of a severe gas attack. Badly affected by the gas he was returned to Australia in January 1919 and discharged medically unfit on th June 1919.

John is commemorated for his service on the Balgownie War Memorial.
