Lindsay Hetherington (Service No 2527) was born in Kiama, N.S.W.

Lindsay enlisted in his home town when he was 26 years old.  He was single and worked as a labourer.  He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A68 Anchises with 45th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement on 24th August 1916.

The troops arrived in England on 11th October 1916, and Lindsay joined 45th Battalion in France on 7th May 1917.  During an attack at Messines he was wounded and evacuated to hospital in England where he was treated for a severe gun shot wound to his right thigh.  The bone in his leg was shattered, with pieces missing.  The injury was to cause ongoing problems for him.

Lindsay was deemed unfit for further active service and repatriated to Australia in December 1917.  He was discharged, medically unfit, with a pension on 12th July 1918.

He returned to Kiama but his physical and mental problems were overwhelming, and he ended his life at home in 1919.

Lindsay is buried in Kiama Cemetery.  His service is commemorated on the Kiama Memorial Arch and Honour Rolls and the Kiama Uniting Church Honour Roll.
