Alfred Alexander Hinde
Alfred Alexander Hinde (Service No 5123) was born in Kiama, N.S.W.
At enlistment in Kiama, N.S.W., with the Waratah March he was 21 years old, single and worked as a spawler.
Alfred embarked on SS Makarini with the 1st Battalion, 16th Reinforcement, on 1st April 1916. He arrived in France on 17th May 1916 and joined the 1st Battalion in the field, on 27th July 1916. Alfred was wounded in action on 20th August 1916, at Pozieres, France, and evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a gun shot wound to his head that had fractured his skull. He returned to duty on 7th March 1917, but was deemed unfit for further active service and repatriated to Australia in August 1917. Alfred was discharged medically unfit due to facial paralysis on 22nd October 1917. Alfred died in Police custody in 1934, and is buried in Lismore Cemetery, Lismore, N.S.W. He was given a military funeral by the local RSL.
Alfred is commemorated for his service on the Kiama Memorial Arch and Honour Rolls.
