Peter Templeman Hunter
Peter Templeman Hunter (Service No 6046), was born in Balgownie, N.S.W., in 1897.
At enlistmment he was single, 19 years old, worked as a wheeler, lived in Balgownie, N.S.W., and had served 4 years with the Cadets. Peter claimed to be 21 years old, but in fact, he was only 19 years old when he enlisted.
He embarked on HMAT A18 Wiltshire, with 13th Battalion, 19th Reinforcement, on 22nd August 1916. Peter arrived in England on 13th October 1916, and joined 13th Battalion in the field, on 19th December 1916. He saw service on the Western Front and has no wounding on file, though he was admitted to hospital on 10th January 1918, for treatment of a foot ulcer.
Whilst on leave, Peter was admitted to hospital with appendicitis. The scarring from the opperation caused problems, and he was returned to Australia in April 1919, and discharged medically unfit on 18th July 1918.
In 1920 Peter married Alice Fielding and they raised 2 children.
Peter died in 1977, and is buried in Wollongong Cemetery.
He is commemorated for his service on the Balgownie Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour and the Balgownie War Memorial 1914-1918.
Peter's brother Alexander (Service No 6116), also served.
