Robert Duncan McKinnon
Robert Duncan McKinnon (Service No 4848) was born in Wollongong, N.S.W.
At enlistment he was 22 years old, single, worked as a carpenter and lived in Lismore, N.S.W. Robert and his brother Peter, enlisted on the same day.
Robert embarked on HMAT A73 Commonwealth, with the 9th Battalion, 15th Reinforcement, on 28th March 1916. He disembarked in Egypt soon after and then went to France, arriving on 14th October 1916. Robert saw service on the Western Front and was wounded in action on 7th May 1917. He returned to duty on 10th June 1917 and there is no injury recorded. Robert returned to Australia in May 1919 and was discharged on 18th August 1919.
When the war ended Robert became a minister. In 1924, just after marrying Thelma Thompson, in Lismore, N.S.W. he was sent to Fiji to serve. Thelma and Robert had 3 children whilst in Fiji, and 3 more after returning to Australia.
Robert's brother, Peter McKinnon (Service No 4847), also served.
