Walter Leslie Hatch (Service No 2647) was born in Newton Boyd, N.S.W.

At enlistment he was 21 years old, single and had served 4 years with the Cadets. Walter joined a march in Wollongong, N.S.W., prior to enlisting.

He embarked on HMAT A20 Hororata with the 6th Light Horse Regiment, 18th Reinforcement, on 2nd May 1916. He disembarked in Egypt and was posted to the 2nd Light Horse Regiment Training Unit as a Sergeant, instructing in the use of the Lewis and Hotchkiss Guns.

In 1916, Walter suffered with ear problems. On 8th March 1917, he reverted to Trooper and joined the 6th Light Horse Regiment, C Squadron. Walter saw service in Egypt and the Middle East. He returned to Australia in March 1919 and was discharged on 28th October 1919.

Walter died in 1933.
