William Dowell (Service No 2569) was born in Young, N.S.W.  On 16th August 1905 he married Edith Cowell in Blaney, N.S.W. and they raised 4 children.

At enlistment William was 31 years old & worked as a government railway coal viewer.

He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A35 Berrima with Rail Supply Detachment, Army Service Corps 11 on 19th December 1914.  He arrived in Egypt in February 1915 and was sent to Gallipoli on 23rd June 1915.

William was promoted to Corporal on 27th June and then to Sergeant on 3rd December 1915.  He returned to Egypt after the evacuation and arrived in France on 13th June 1916.

He saw service on the Western Front and was returned to Australia as staff on duty in May 1918.  He was discharged medically unfit on 30th July 1918.

William died in Bulli, N.S.W. in 1956.  His service is commemorated at the Thirroul-Woodward Memorial Park.

William's brother, Albert (Service No 1397) was killed in action in 1916.
