Cyril Battye (Service No 5283) was born in Albury, N.S.W.

At enlistment Cyril was single, 23 years old, worked as a surveyors labourer and lived in Sydney. He joined the Waratah March in Nowra, N.S.W. and embarked from Sydney on board SS Makarini with 1st Battalion, 16th Reinforcement on 1st April 1916.

Cyril arrived in France on 17th May 1916 and joined 1st Battalion on 27th July 1916.  He saw service on the Western Front until 29th September 1916 when he was evacuated sick suffering from severe enteritis, and admitted to hospital.  He returned to duty on 20th March 1917 but his health continued to cause problems and he was returned to Australia in January 1918.

Cyril was discharged, medically unfit, with a pension, on 16th April 1918.

On 8th December 1918 he married Florence Alley and together they raised a family.  Cyril had 2 brothers who also served.  He died in Sydney in 1973 and his service is commemorated on the Nowra Post Office and Showground Memorials.
