Henry Sweet
Henry Sweet was born in Sydney around 1885.
At enlistment Henry was single, 30 years old, worked as a labourer,and lived with his mother at Bombo, N.S.W.
Henry has 2 sets of service records (Service No 3441 & Service No 4323, although his two National Archives of Australia records are identical). Subsequently, it is unclear if Henry embarked with the 11th Reinforcment, 4 Battalion on 13th October 1915, or 13th Reinforcement, 4th Battalion, on 20th December 1915.
After he arrived in Egypt, Henry was transferred to D Company, 2nd Battalion on 14th February 1916. He arrived in France on 28th March 1916.
Henry was wounded in action on 22nd/23rd July 1916 at Pozieres and evacuated to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his left arm. He returned to his unit on 29th September 1916 and served on the Western Front until wounded a second time on 2nd October 1917 at Passchendaele. He was evacuated to hospital for treatment of shrapnel wounds to his right thigh.
Henry was transferred to 5th Machine Gun Battalion on 22nd June 1918 and served with this until the end of the war.
He was returned to Australia in May 1919 and discharged on 18th August 1919.
Not long after Henry returned home to Bombo his young brother, Frank, died from the influenza.
Henry died in Kiama in 1960. His service is commemorated on the Kiama Memorial Arch and Honour Rolls.
