Arthur William Tate
Arthur William Tate (Service No 4841) was born in Wollongong, N.S.W.
In 1907, he married Elizabeth Dobbie in Wollongong, N.S.W., and the couple had 5 children.
At enlistment he was 34 years old, worked as a timber orderman and had served 6 years with the Wollongong Rifle Club.
Arthur embarked on HMAT A 40 Ceramic, with the 17th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement, on 13th April 1916.
He disembarked in England on 7th June 1916, and then went to France on 9th September 1916. Arthur joined the 53rd Battalion in the field on 9th October 1916, seeing service on the Western Front.
Arthur was wounded in action on 26th September 1917, and evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a severe gun shot wound to his left knee. He was returned to Australia in January 1919 and discharged medically unfit on 13th June 1919.
Arthur died in 1956 and is buried in Woronora Cemetery, Sutherland, N.S.W.
