George William Nicholls
George Nicholls (Service no 3359) was born in West Wallsend, NSW in 1893.
George first enlisted with the Waratah March on 10 December 1915 but was medically discharged on 28 March 1916.
George re-enlisted on 18 September 1916 but was discharged a few days later.
On 14 October 1916, George married Francis Parsons in Corrimal, NSW.
George re-enlisted on 10 August 1917. At enlistment he was married, 25 years of age and employed as a labourer. George embarked on HMAT A28 - Miltades with the 36th Battalion, 8th Reinforcements on 2 August 1917. He arrived in England on 2 October 1917 but found himself unfit for active service. George was returned to Australia in February 1918 and medically discharged on 24 April 1918. He had suffered serious injuries to his arm and elbow as a result of his civilian employment before the War that had caused him a permanent disability.
George worked as a miner at the South Bulli Colliery after the War and together he and Francis raised 9 children.
George died in 1949.
