Alfred James Stein (Service No 1247), was born in Kiama, N.S.W.

The family moved to Tasmania, early in Alfred's life.  

At enlistment, he was single, 21 years old, worked as a labourer and lived in Queenstown, Tasmania.

Alfred embarked from Melbourne, on HMAT A40 Ceramic, with 15th Battalion, H Company, on 22nd December 1914. He arrived in Egypt, and after training, embarked for Gallipoli, Turkey, landing on 25th April 1915. Alfred survived the first frantic days but was wounded in action on 2nd May 1915.

Alfred was evacuated to the hospital ship, Gascon, for treatment of a severe gun shot wound to his abdomen.

Alfred died on 3rd May 1915, from his wounds.

Alfred was buried at sea, and is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, in the Lone Pine Cemetery, Turkey.

Alfred's brother, Thomas Stein (Service No 7075), also served.
