In 1915 Eric enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy and served as a Boy and Seaman until 1924.  Navy records do not list awards but his file indicates some war service so at least the British War Medal and Victory Medal would have been awarded.

Eric enlisted for service in World War II on 19th February 1941 (Service No N105782) and served as a Private 8th Garrison Battalion until 31st December 1941.

In 1954 Eric became ill and was sent from Coffs Harbour Hospital to a Sydney hosptial where he died soon after.

The Coffs Harbour RSL (Returned Services League) estabished an annual School Prize as a memorial to Eric.
