Eric Silvester Youngman
Eric Youngman (Service No 4725) was born in Wollongong, N.S.W. in 1899. Eric and his siblings were left fatherless when his father George was killed in the Mount Kembla mine disaster on 31st July 1902.
In 1915 Eric enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy and served as a Boy and Seaman until 1924. Navy records do not list awards but his file indicates some war service so at least the British War Medal and Victory Medal would have been awarded.
In 1921 Eric married Lydia Eaton in Sydney and they raised 6 children. After he left the Navy Eric & Lydia settled in Coffs Harbour, N.S.W. where he became a well known and popular man.
Eric enlisted for service in World War II on 19th February 1941 (Service No N105782) and served as a Private 8th Garrison Battalion until 31st December 1941.
In 1954 Eric became ill and was sent from Coffs Harbour Hospital to a Sydney hosptial where he died soon after.
The Coffs Harbour RSL (Returned Services League) estabished an annual School Prize as a memorial to Eric.
