Frederick Warren Muir

Frederick Muir (644) was born in Wollongong, the son of James and Alice Muir. He was an early enlistment and embarked with the first contingent on HMAT Afric A19 on 18th October, 1914. After training in Egypt he sailed for Gallipoli and was at the landing serving in the 1st Battalion. He seems to have survived the campaign unscathed as there are no illness or injury entries in his file until the 25th November when he was wounded. He was evacuated to the hospital ship Glenart Castle but at 2:50 am on 28th November he died suddenly and was buried at sea. His memory is kept alive at Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey.

Letters at the War Memorial indicate he was shot by a sniper while in the front line trenches.These letters indicate that he and others believed he would survive his injuries. He must have enjoyed the military life as he had been a Lieutenant in the cadets before enlisting.
