Private Thomas Chinnock (Service no. 4622) was born in Mount Kembla, the son of George and Sarah Chinnock. He was the first of three Chinnock brothers to enlist in the AIF in January 1916.

On 9th April, 1916 he embarked with the 11th Reinforcements, 18th Battalion on HMAT A71 Nestor. He saw service on the Western Front and suffered from Trench Feet, being admitted to hospital for treatment on 24th November, 1916. He returned to his unit and served with them safely in 1917 and early 1918. In August 1918 he was wounded in action with a gunshot wound to his left shoulder but stayed at the Front.

On 29th November, 1918 he was recommended for an award but it does not appear to have been given. The citation reads:

For gallantry and devotion to duty during the period 9th August 1918 until October 1918. During this period he was acting as company stretcher bearer. He worked unceasingly in the performance of his duties. Showing the greatest energy and a complete disregard of all danger, and it was in a very great measure. Due to his personal exertions that the wounded were carried back to the Regimental aid post.

Thomas returned to Australia in June 1919

On the 4th September, 1924 he married Margaret Edwards, raising a family and lived in the Illawarra until his death in 1977 aged 84.

I'm proud of my grandfather Thomas for what he has done. He died when I was a baby but would have loved to hear his War story's.
