Stanley Bates (Service No 5648) was born in Cessnock, N.S.W and was a well known sulky driver in the Illawarra when he joined the Waratah March.

Stanley was single, 26 years old and lived in Wollongong when he enlisted on 29 November 1915.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A55 Kyarra on 3rd June 1916 with 18th Reinforcements, 1st Battalion.  The troops arrived in England on 3rd August 1916 and Stanley joined the Battalion in France on 24th September 1916 and saw service on the Western Front.

Stanley went missing in England for a while and was discharged from the AIF on 21 July 1920.  

Stanley died at Penshurst, Sydney in 1967. He is buried at Woronora Cemetery.

Some of the above information is incorrect and needs attention. It was a different Bates who married Adelaide Lapham. Adelaide's husband was my wife's grandfather, Stanley Norman Septimus Bates. Stanley Norman Septimus Bates was the Stanley Bates who died in 1967 and not the Stanley Bates mentioned in this memorial.
