Herbert Clegg (Service No 1930) was a single 24 year old railway fireman, living in Bellambi, NSW when he enlisted with his brother Thomas Arthur Clegg (Service No 1931). They embarked on HMAT A55 Kyarra on 13th April 1915 with 5th Reinforcements 3rd Battalion. Herbert arrived on Gallipoli on 14th June 1915 and saw service there with his brother until he was wounded in action on 7th August 1915.

He was evacuated for treatment for a shrapnel wound to his right shoulder. Herbert recovered and returned to Gallipoli on 10th October 1915. On 8th December he was admitted to 1st General Hospital for treatment of an old arm wound. On 8th April 1916 he was again admitted to 3rd Auxillary Hospital in Cairo for a fracture to his left leg.

Herbert was returned to Australia in May 1916 and discharged medically unfit on 15th September 1916.
On 22nd November 1916 he married Lizetta Dalby at Bulli. His brother Thomas was killed during the Battle for Lone Pine on 7 August, 1915.
