Frederick Atkinson (Service No 593/ 593A) was born in Lithgow. N.S.W. around 1890.

When Frederick enlisted at the age of 26, he was single, lived at Helensburgh, N.S.W. and worked as a shunter.  Frederick had served 3 years in the Field Artillery Militia.

He embarked from Melbourne on RMS Omrah with 10th Reinforcements, 1st Machine Gun Battalion on 17th January 1917.  The troops arrived in England on 27th March 1917 and after training, Frederick joined 1st Machine Gun Battalion in Belgium on 28th September 1917.

On 14th October 1917 he was evacuated to hospital in England with severe influenza.  He did not return to the Western Front until 28th September 1918.  On 30th October 1918 he was again admitted to hospital sick.

Frederick was returned to Australia in March 1919 and discharged medically unfit on 5th April 1919.
