Details:

John Dooley (Service No 2617) was born in Shellharbour, N.S.W. around 1890.

When John enlisted at the age of 25 he was living with his father in Goulburn, N.S.W.; he was single and employed as an engine driver.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A14 Euripides with 6th Reinforcements, 18th Battalion on 2nd November 1915.  The troops were sent to Egypt, and on 14th February 1916 John was posted to 3rd Battalion.

John arrived in France on 28th March 1916 and took part in the Somme offensive.  Some time between 22nd and 27th July 1916 John was killed in action.  Red Cross evidence is conflicted but all agree he was killed by a shell during a very heavy bombardment.

There is no known grave for John; he is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneaux, France.
