Cleveland Holmes Alexander
Cleveland Holmes Alexander (Service No 5030), was born in Windsor, N.S.W.
He enlisted, as a member of the Waratah March, in Kiama, N.S.W. At enlistment, he was single, 23 years old, worked as a bank teller with the E.S.& A. Bank.
Cleveland embarked on SS Makarini, with 1st Battalion Reinforcement, on 1st April 1916. He arrived in France on 17th May 1916 and joined 1st Battalion in the field, on 18th June. Only 3 days later, on 21st June 1916, he was wounded in action and evacuated to hospital in England, for treatment of gun shot wounds to his left thigh and knee.
He was repatriated to Australia, as a Corporal, in October 1916. On 25th April 1917, after receiving further treatment in Australia, Cleveland was discharged medically unfit.
He returned to his job in late 1917, and in 1919 began working for the Commonwealth Bank.
In 1924, he married Dorothy Nielsen.
Cleveland Alexander is commemorated on the Nowra Post Office Roll of Honor.
