William Ernest Cavanagh (Service No 1213), was born in Queanbeyan, N.S.W., in 1892.

At enlistment he was single, 24 years old, worked as a labourer and lived in Wollongong, N.S.W. William listed his mother, who lived in Wollongong, as his next of kin.

He embarked on RMS Mooltan with Camel Corps, 4th Reinforcement, on 19th August 1916. After arriving in Egypt, he was posted to 4th Imperial Camel Corps, C Squadron, on 16th November 1916. 

On 19th April 1917, William was wounded in action and admitted to hospital for treatment of a gun shoot wound to his left shoulder. During his service in the Middle East and Egypt, he had a number of medical issues. He returned to Australia in July 1919.

William died on 27th March 1921, in Randwick Military Hospital, Randwick, N.S.W.

He is buried in Wollongong Cemetery, Wollongong, N.S.W.
