William Chesher was born in Carcoar, central N.S.W.

At enlistment Willam was single, 24 years old, employed as a railway employee and lived at Spring Hill, N.S.W.  He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A19 Afric 57th Battalion, 7th Reinforcement on 3rd November 1916.

The troops arrived in England on 9th January 1917 and William joined 57th Battalion in France on 16th April 1917.  He saw service on the Western Front until 27th April 1918 when he was wounded in action. He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a severe gun shot wound to his back and chest.

William was repatriated to Australia in December 1918 and discharged medically unfit on 13th March 1919.

William enlisted for service in World War II (Service No N70549) in Wollongong, N.S.W. and served with 22nd Garrison Battalion as a Private, from 16th October 1939 until 31st July 1944.

William never married.  He died in 1958 and is buried in Macquarie Park Cemetery, Sydney.
