John Chesher (Service No 4013) was born in Grenfell, N.S.W. around 1890.

At enlistment he was single, 25 years old, worked as a labourer and lived at Port Kembla, N.S.W.  He embarked from Sydney on HMAT A7 Medic with 4th Battalion, 12th Reinforcement on 3rd December 1915.

He arrived in Egypt on 7th January 1916 and was sent on to France, arriving on 10th March 1916.  John saw service at Pozieres where he was wounded in action sometime between 22nd and 27th July 1916. He was evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a severe gun shot wound to his left leg.  He returned to duty on 16th October 1917 but was admitted to hospital sick on 12th December 1917.

John was repatriated to Australia in July 1918 having been diagnosed with an enlarged heart and deemed unfit for further active service.  He was discharged medically unfit on 24th March 1919.

In 1919 John married Monica Crowe in Sydney and they raised 3 children.  He died in 1955.
