Richard George Buchanan
Richard Buchanan (Service no 1992) was born in Wollongong, NSW.
At the time of enlistment, Richard was single, 24 years of age, employd as a miner and resided in Corrimal, NSW.
Richard embarked on HMAT A70 - Ballarat with the 30th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcements on 16 February 1916. He arrived in Egypt and joined the 30th Battalion there on 1 April 1916.
Richard was posted to France with his Unit on 25 June 1916 and took part in the battle for Fromelle. He was wounded in action on 20 July 1916 and evacuated to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his scalp.
Richard returned to duty on 29 August. On 5 December 1916, Richard was sent to hospital in England for treatment of trench feet and returned to the 30th Battalion in the field on 18 November 1917.
On 8 August 1918 Richard was promoted to Lance Corporal.
Richard was wounded in action a second time on 1 October 1918 and evacuated to hospital in England for treatment of a bullet wound to his right leg.
Richard returned to Australia in January 1919 and was medically discharged on 27 May 1919.
In 192, Richard married Ada Wood in Bulli and together they raised 5 children.
Richard died in Corrimal, NSW in 1965.
Richard's brother Thomas Buchanan (Service no 5654) also served.
