George Elliott Brown (Service No 315 & 5796) was born in Kiama, N.S.W., in December 1891.

He enlisted in Brisbane, Qld, as Private Brown (Service No 315) embarking on 29th June 1915. George arrived in Gallipoli, Turkey, and served with the 25th Battalion, B Company, until he was evacuated on 25th October 1915 with enteric fever. On 3rd January 1916, he was returned to Australia for 3 months rest. 

At the time of his return to active service, George was 23 years old, single, worked as a carter and lived in Gerringong, N.S.W. He embarked as Pte Brown (Service No 5796), on HMAT A55 Kyarra with 1st Battalion, 18th Reinforcements, on 3rd June 1916. George arrived in France on 16th October 1916 as a Corporal. He joined the 53rd Battalion and served with them until the end of the war.

On 10th May 1917, George was wounded in action and evacuated to hospital for treatment of severe gun shot wounds to his arm and leg. He returned to his unit on 16th October 1917. He was wounded a second time on 7th July 1918 but remained on duty.

George was promoted to Sergeant on 1st August 1918. He returned to England after the war ended and got himself into trouble with the civilian authorities. He was demoted to the rank of Private before he was returned to Australia, in January 1920. He was discharged on 27th April 1920.

On 20th April 1921, George married Margaret McNamara in Dapto, N.S.W., and the couple settled in Grafton, N.S.W.

George died in Grafton, N.S.W., in 1959.
