David Donald Byrne (Service No 1806) was born in Yeoval, N.S.W., around 1887.

At enlistment he was 29 years old, single, worked as a  labourer and listed his sister Cecilia, of Thirroul, N.S.W., as his next of kin.

David embarked on HMAT A15 Port Sydney with the 36th Battalion, 2nd Reinforcement  on 4th September 1916. He disembarked in England on 29th October 1916 and joined the 36th Battalion, C Company, in the field, on 18th January 1917.

David was wounded on 31st January 1917 but remained on duty. He served on the Western Front until 7th June 1917 when he was wounded in action at Messines, France. David was evacuated to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his leg. On 25th August he was attached to the 1st Australian General Hospital and returned to Australia in December 1918 as nursing staff. He was discharged medically unfit on 17th April 1919.

David died in 1955 and is buried in Yeoval Cemetery, Yeoval, N.S.W.
