Robert Chisholm (Service No 5053) was born in Sydney.

At enlistment he was single, 23 years old, employed as a chemist and lived at Kiama, NSW; Robert had served 4 years with the Cadets.  He embarked from Sydney on board SS Makarini with 3rd Battalion, 16th Reinforcement on 1st April 1916.

After a stop in Egypt Robert joined 3rd Battalion, C Company in the field on 12th August 1916.

Robert saw service on the Western Front.  He was admitted to hospital wounded on 16th August 1916 with shell shock but returned to duty on 22nd August.  Robert was wounded a second time on 22nd March 1918 and was admitted to hospital in England for treatment of gas poisoning.  He returned to duty on 15th June 1918, but was wounded a third time on 18th September again due to a gas attack.  On 19th October 1919 Robert sustained an injury to his arms.

He was returned to Australia in June 1919 and discharged medically unfit due to the injury to his arms.

A death notice for Robert Chisholm states he had attended the Anzac Day march on 26th April 1921 and met up with old friends but died suddenly at home that same day.  The obituary states that he had not really recovered from the gas attacks he had been exposed to during the war.  He is buried in Woronora Cemetery, Sydney.
