Rhys Hirwann Bevan (Service No 2524), was born in Bulli, N.S.W.

At enlistment, he was single, 21 years old, worked as a labourer, lived in Thirroul, N.S.W., and had served 2 years with the 37th Infantry Senior Cadets.

Rhys embarked on HMAT A24 Benalla, with the 38th Battalion, 5th Reinforcement, on 9th November 1916. He arrived in England on 9th January 1917, and joined the 38th Battalion in the field, on 25th August 1917. His move to the front was delayed, when he was admitted to hospital in England on 10th March 1917, with severe pneumonia. Rhys saw service on the Western Front until 13th October 1917, when he was wounded in action in the Third Battle of Ypres. He was evacuated to hospital for treatment of a gun shot wound to his left hip. Deemed unfit for further active service, Rhys was returned to Australia, in February 1918, and discharged medically unfit with a pension, on 19th June 1918.

In 1919, Rhys married Ethel Mackinnon, in Bulli, N.S.W., where they raised their 5 children. He worked for the railways after the war.

Rhys died in 1966 and is buried in Wollongong Cemetery, Wollongong, N.S.W.

Rhys is commemorated for his service on the Thirroul Cenotaph, Woodward Memorail Park, Lawrence Hargrave Drive, Thirroul, N.S.W.

Rhys' brother, William Bevan MC, also served.
