I grew up hearing about Uncle "Dave" Chopping. I think his stories were one of the things that got me interested in family history. He was my grandfather's younger brother. His parents were Job Chopping and Harriet King who both came from Essex. Harriet was Job's second wife and the family came to Australia soon after they married. Samuel Davey was named for both his paternal grandparents, who stayed in Essex. Samuel Chopping and Eliza Davey. The Davey name has been passed down the family. Uncle Dave sent my grandparents a post card from London where he was on leave before returning to the front, shortly before he died. I still possess the post card. He was wounded at the battle of Ypres and died shortly afterwards in a Field hospital. I always thought it was sad as my granny Chopping, his mother would have gotten the telegram to say he was wounded after he was already dead.
