William Cecil Shannon
William Shannon (Service No 2788) was born in Cobar, N.S.W. in 1896 and attended Cobar Public School.
William enlisted at the age of 19, when he was single, worked as a labourer, and lived at Port Kembla, N.S.W. He had served previously for 4 years in the Cadets and with 37th Infantry.
William embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A14 Euripides with 6th Reinforcements, 19th Battalion on 2nd November 1915. After arriving in Egypt he was transferred to 4th Battalion on 14th February 1916. While in Egypt he was admitted to hospital with the mumps on 21st February 1916. He recovered and arrived in France on 30th March 1916.
William was killed in action in France on 5th May 1916.
He is buried in Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, France; Plot I, Row J, Grave 58.
William'sbrother Thomas Shannon (Service No 7797) also served and returned safetly to Australia.

William Cecil Shannon
I have a memorial card with Cec Shannon's photo on it. Cec Shannon was killed by an Australian soldier named Kennedy when Cec was returning from a night patrol. Kennedy mistook Cec Shannon for a German.
