Illawarra Remembers 1914-1918 is a community project that was developed to mark the centenary of World War I.
The Illawarra Remembers website was launched in April 2014 as a joint project coordinated by Wollongong City Libraries.
Members of the public were invited to share images and stories to create a long-term digital archive of local history material about the people of the Illawarra area during World War I.
This era was identified as being under-represented in our local studies collection compared to more recent conflicts, particularly World War II.
The Illawarra Remembers website was established with grant funding from the State Library of NSW. Our partners in the project included the NSW Government, Library Council of NSW, Kiama Library, Shellharbour City Libraries, Illawarra Family History Group, and University of Wollongong.
Today, Illawarra Remembers is managed by Wollongong City Libraries.
We continue to invite people to contribute images, stories, comments and other relevant material to help us build this valuable community resource and tell the story of this significant time in our city's , and our country's, history.
